This year’s reenactment of the historic Kadaugan sa Mactan will be given a little twist with more focus given on Reyna Bulakna, the wife of Datu Lapu-Lapu.

Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Paz Radaza said the annual reenactment scheduled on April 27 will include a background on who Bulakna is and the significant role that she played in the life and struggles of Datu Lapu-Lapu.

“It (the reenactment) will be musical and we will focus on the life of Reyna Bulakna because for so many years, it was always them (Lapu-Lapu and Magellan). But for this year, we will add a little history of Bulakna,” Radaza said during the kick-off of the 498th Kadaugan sa Mactan celebration on Saturday afternoon.

Cebuano actress Dionne Monsanto will play the role of Bulakna with basketball player turned model-actor Derick Hubalde as Lapu-Lapu. Hubalde was one of the vampires in the recently concluded ABS-CBN tele-series “La Luna Sangre.”

Manila-based actor Luis Alandy will be this year’s Ferdinand Magellan.

The annual reenactment is a celebration of the bravery and the victory of Mactan natives led by Datu Lapu-Lapu against the Spanish invaders led by Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan who landed on their shorelines on April 27, 1521.

Radaza said this year’s reenactment will include the singing of Visayan songs and live chanting.

On Saturday, Radaza led the kickoff ceremony for this year’s celebration with a food festival participated by different resorts and hotels in the city, held at the Liberty Shrine in Barangay Mactan and attended by Senator Cynthia Villar, chairman of the senate committee on agriculture.
