Fisherfolk group cries ‘No’ to reclamation

No to reclamation project.

This was the call among fishermen to stop reclamation projects in Cebu as part of the celebration of Earth Day on Sunday, April 22.

Brother Peter Simon Francis Jardinico of the Franciscan Friars of Charity said that fisherfolks are the most affected in reclamation projects such as the 100-hectare development in Minglanilla town and 1,500-hectare reclamation project proposed by SM Prime Holdings Inc. in Cordova if it will push through.

At least 15 fishing boats with banners crying opposition for reclamation projects, arrived at Kawit Island in South Road Properties (SRP) on Sunday noon.

“Ang epekto sa mangingisda mao ang pagwagtang sa ilang panginabuhian ka dili man nimo pwede marelocate ang mga mangingisda ngadto sa bukid o asa man dapita kay nagsalig man ni sila sa kadagatan,” he said.

Jardinico said there should be a sustainable development which does not cause damage to natural resources.

Among the cause-oriented groups who joined the fluvial protest were Bayan Central Visayas, Bayan Muna, Gabriela Cebu and Panaghiusa sa mga Mangingisda sa Timog Amihanang Cordova (Pamatia-Co), with at least 200 participants.
