Gov’s Cup verdict on Naga vs Minglanilla game: re-play overtime period

THE CEBU Provincial Sports Commission (CPSC) and the commissioners of the Cebu Governor’s Cup Inter-Cities/Municipalities Basketball tournament have decided on what to do with the controversial match between the defending champions Minglanilla Archangels and the Naga Electrifiers last Monday at the latter’s court in Enan Chiong Activity Center.

In a resolution released yesterday, league officials decided that both teams will re-play the five-minute extension of the said game to settle the outcome.

The resolution was signed by commissioner Mitchel “Danny ” Duran, and deputy commissioners Van Halen Parmis, Isidro Aguelo Jr., Lou Regidor and Albert Allocillo

The verdict came after an investigation done by the CPSC and the commissioners of the cash-rich, province-wide league.

Naga initially won that game, 93-91, via a clutch three-point shot with 0.7 seconds by Justin Atilano.

Minglanilla, however, put that game under protest, saying Naga had six players. It was later established by officials that Naga did have six players on the court in that final play.

“A five-minute re-play shall be done to determine the rightful winner between Naga and Minglanilla as soon as possible,” the resolution stated. “The committee shall set the date soon. All conditions prevailing after the end of the regulation period shall be observed in the conduct of the replay.”

This means when the re-play of the match is set, both teams will start at 75-all, which was the score after four quarters of that game.

Apart from that, the resolution also stated that the referees and table officials of that game will be indefinitely suspended from officiating Governor’s Cup games.

For Abing, it was the first time that they encountered such an incident in the tournament. He hopes that lessons will be learned from this issue.

“I sincerely hope, in the spirit of sportsmanship and greater interest of the league, both parties will heed and understand the decision of the committee,” said Abing. “The incident is a lesson learned for all the officials and should strengthen the Governor’s Cup.”
