The construction yard in Cordova town where a pile of used clothing or ukay-ukay was dumped was shut down yesterday allegedly due to sanitation concerns.
The yard owned by the Virlo Construction Development Corp. will however, re-open tomorrow.
A security guard said the yard owner ordered the closure.
The 15-feet high pile of garments will be segregated to enable buyers to easily sift through the items.
Garments, bedsheets and curtains are sold between P5 and P25.
Lita Borja traveled from Balamban town to buy blankets and other garments.
“I saw on TV that they are selling ukay-ukay for as low as P5 so I came here hoping that I can have something to bring home for my grandchildren,” Borja said in Cebuano.
Cordova Mayor Adelino Sitoy said a team from the Municipal Health Office had checked the yard and found no threat of possible health hazards.
Sitoy said he has already asked the owner of the “ukay-ukay” mountain to donate some used clothing to the Yolanda survivors in northern Cebu.
Sitoy said he was informed that the company has already donated used clothes to the typhoon survivors in Leyte as well as earthquake victims in Bohol.
