RENZ WYNN CORBIN
To represent the Philippines in international competitions is the dream of every athlete. And 16-year-old triathlete Renz Wynn Corbin is well aware that the Philippine National Games (PNG) is a huge chance for him to get noticed.
“I want to join PNG because I want to represent the Philippines and as a way to show my gratitude to my parents, coach, and mentors who supported me,” said Corbin who trains with the Talisay Luigi Triathlon Team.
Although already a member of the national developmental pool for triathlon, Corbin is targeting no less than a podium finish in his very first PNG, to be officially admitted to the national team.
“I am already part of the developmental team, I have tried qualifying for YOG (Youth Olympic Games) Argentina but was just part of the top 5. My ultimate objective is to represent our country which will be a great honor,” Corbin explained of why he wants to be a member of the national team.
Triathlon is not Corbin’s first sport. He started out as a swimmer but got influenced by his best friend, Andrew Kim Remolino, one of the Philippines’ top junior triathletes. He switched sports four years ago.
According to Corbin, triathlon inspires him to be a better person not only in sports.
“Every competition has its lesson. And I look up to my teammate Kim Remolino and the rest of the national team like Nikko Huelgas and John Chicano and lastly to my coach who inspires me to be the best version of my self every day,” said Corbin.
Corbin is an incoming Grade 10 student of the Talisay City Science High School and is the oldest of two siblings.
Another reason why he wants to be part of the national team badly is because it will be his way of thanking all those who supported him in the sport which is exactly not cheap.
“Naa akong mga grandparents, uncles and aunties na nitabang ug karon naa si Sir Jeremy sa Go for Gold thru my coach Roland Remolino,” Corbin said. (My grandparents, uncles and aunties are helping out, and now there’s sir Jeremy of Go for Gold thru my coach Roland Remolino.)
Corbin’s dream does not end with just making it to the national team though. Just like all dedicated athletes, he also aims of becoming an Olympian.
“With more hard work, I want to be an Olympian someday. And, make my family proud.”
The triathlon competition of the PNG will be held in the municipality of Tabuelan, north of Cebu City on May 23 and 24.
