With the rainy season drawing near and the opening of classes in public schools on June 4, the Local Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (LDRMMO) in Talisay City is closely monitoring landslide and flashflood prone areas in the city.
Alvin Santillano, LDRRMO head, said that these were part of their measures to assure the safety of the public especially start of classes next week.
One of the areas the the Talisay City LDRMMO is monitoring is Barangay Manipis, where the Manipis Elementary School is located.
Santillano said that the school is in a high risk area of the city and is also classified as a landslide prone area.
He said that one safety measure implemented was to set up a “public address” (PA) system there, which could be used to warn people of a coming danger or a coming threat such as possible landslides so that the people would know about it and could be prepared to handle it.
Santillana said that the equipment (PA system) was donated from the funds raised during the Iron Man event in Cebu.
Aside from Manipis, the LDRMMO is also closely monitoring major areas in the city that are considered landslide and flashflood prone areas such as Barangay Lagtang and Barangay Jaclupan.
With the opening of classes next week, the LDRMMO is also intensifying its information campaign on disaster prevention in schools especially in schools in high-risk areas.
He said that they had been conducting disaster prevention training seminars in some schools that requested for these kind of trainings for their Emergency Rescue Teams.
