The relationship between reality and fantasy defines the house of Philipp Tampus.
After all, this was the home of surrealist chic founded years back where decoding dreams —and drawing on them to fuel the creative aspects of the brand —was everything.
Tampus has been tasked with speaking to the label’s madcap and madly inventive past and its redoubtable founding ground, as well as charging it with a hefty dose of fizzing 21st-century glamour.
Luxury means bravery—unafraid to express,” fashion designer Philipp Tampus returns to Cebu after releasing his 2018 luxury collection.
“My aesthetics is elegance, classic and wearable that will never be out of style. Giving shape to every woman is always my goal; that gives them more confidence in wearing my creation.”
The gradient effects—almost trompe l’oeils—continue to reinstall the techniques he has been famous for in his repertoire, such as the myriad ways he rethought the tribal jacket, throwing in lace, Italian satin fringing or feathery fronds, and flowing chiffon, a gilded padlock.
“Modern high fashioned Filipinas plus Modern Victorian, light but still rich in fabrication,” describes Tampus.
Ironically, the chicest of them all was (relatively speaking) the simplest: a landscape tapestry tailored into a blazer worn over a diaphanous claret dégradé chiffon pleated skirt.
There were plenty of big statements for evening, dresses that packed a punch exiting rather more than they did arriving, which could be said to be a pretty surrealist trick, too.
But in the end, the less thematic the collection went, the better it got. Consider the tattoo-inspired day dress, one side asymmetrically draped to
fall, worn with espadrilles, or the confection of blue green and rust chiffon for evening that looked as light as a butterfly wing.
How escapist they are will entirely depend on you, but they certainly were the dreamiest things to be found here.
