Former UV guard Eman Calo making most out of MPBL stint

Former University of the Visayas (UV) standout guard Emmanuel Calo is making the most out of the opportunity to showcase his skills before a national audience as he scored 21 points in Davao Occidental’s 90-78 win over the Quezon City Capitals in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) Datu Cup last Tuesday night at the Pasig Sports Center.

Largely unknown after playing for the Green Lancers as he spent time barnstorming one “ligang labas” after another, Calo broke out for 21 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals in 21 minutes of action.

With ex-pro Bonbon Custodio in sick bay due to a back injury, Calo took advantage as he helped key a game-deciding 17-3 Tigers run in the third that broke the backs of the Capitals.

In a talk after the game, Calo relayed that he feels right at home with the Tigers.

“It’s nice here because even though we have a lot of ex-pros, there isn’t anyone here who acts like he’s the star. We’re all treated the same here by Coach Don Dulay,” said Calo.

Calo added that he is making the most out of his time here in the league founded by boxing star, Manny Pacquiao, as he learns from Dulay, a point guard that played for Rain or Shine in the PBA.

Calo said that playing in the MPBL just might the push he needs to make it to the next level.

“It’s a dream come to true to play for a league like this. I consider it a huge stepping stone for my career. Of course, playing in the PBA is one of my goals but right now, I’m focusing on how to help Davao win games,” Calo said.
