Bantayan downs Medellin; San Francisco, Consolacion make North Division Finals

Bantayan managed to score a victory in the North Division semifinal round of the Governor’s Cup Inter-Cities and Municipalities Basketball Tournament 2018, winning over Medellin, 89-85, in overtime on Thursday night at the Mandaue City Cultural and Sports Center.

Romeo Sumbi Jr. had 24 points and John Ray Caracena added 23 to carry Bantayan to the victory.

Medellin was led by Gelmart Umpad’s 18 and Riel Veloso’s 17 points.

Both teams ended their semis campaigns with identical 1-2 (win-loss) cards and will be eliminated from the tournament.

San Francisco (2-0) and Consolacion (1-1), who were facing each other as of press time, will advance to the North Division Finals.

Even if Consolacion loses and drops to the same 1-2 record with Medellin and Bantayan, it will still take the second seat of the finals owing to its superior quotient, according to a tournament official.

Medellin sent the game to overtime after Veloso made pressure-packed free throws that tied the score at 78-all at the end of regulation.
