BAYUGAN CITY, Agusan del Sur — Phoenix Petroleum/University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters head coach Raul “Yayoy” Alcoseba is not satisfied with his team’s current showing in the ongoing cash-rich 8th Mayor Kim Lope A. Asis Invitational Basketball Tournament at the Lope Asis Memorial Gymnasium.
Even after a 70-55 manhandling of his former team, the Mair Construction/Southwestern University (SWU)-Phinma Cobras, on Thursday night that assured a final four seat, Alcoseba said his team is just showing half of what it could really do.
“I was telling the players that it’s not Bayugan that we are preparing for, it’s for the Cesafi. So each game we have to play better, and we have to improve both our offense and defense, our chemistry and everything,” Alcoseba said.
The team’s stint in this tournament, though, is a good way to work on what’s needed to be done to be a hundred percent come the Cesafi wars which kicks off August 25.
“Bayugan is one way to determine what aspect of our team needs improvement. We are here playing against Manila teams to gain more experience, maturity and confidence in time for the Cesafi,” added Alcoseba, who led the Webmasters to a runner-up finish in last year’s season of the Cesafi.
The Webmasters has a 1-1 (win-loss) record in Group B. They will face Group A top team Madyaw Construction-National University (NU) Bulldogs, who were unbeaten in two games and were playing their third game as of this writing.
