ALTHOUGH they are already assured of a spot in the finals of the high school division, the University of the Visayas (UV) Baby Lancers aren’t taking their foot off the gas pedal when they take on the winless Cebu Institute of Technology-University (CIT-U) Wildkittens today in the 2018 Cesafi Partner’s Cup Preseason Tournament at the Cebu Coliseum.
UV booked a spot in the finals with a 101-90 come-from-behind win over the University of Cebu (UC) Baby Webmasters, in a game they trailed by eight early in the fourth.
The tides eventually turned after UV rattled off a huge 21-2 run that put them in front for good.
According to the Baby Lancers’ long time head coach Delfin Pepito, the team got their rhythm when they first focused on the defensive end of the floor.
“I told them to just focus on defense and minimize their turnovers,” relayed Pepito in a talk yesterday.
From that point onwards, Gabriel Cometa, Joshua Yerro, Beirn Laurente and Albert Sacayan took turns battering UC’s defense to nab them the win and book a finals showdown against a University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) team that managed to beat them in the first game of this tournament.
Meanwhile in the college division, the Southwestern University-Phinma Cobras will try to end this tournament on a winning note as they contend for just their second victory, against the CIT-U Wildcats.
Much like their younger counterparts, the Wildcats are on the brink of finishing the preseason without a single win at 0-5.
