DPS to light up the Transcentral Highway

The Transcentral Highway in Brgy. Gaas, Balamban, Cebu.

Light posts will soon be erected to illuminate the path of motorists traversing Cebu City’s sections of the Cebu Transcentral Highway.

Cebu City Department of Public Services (DPS) Chief Roberto Cabarrubias announced on Friday that they were only waiting for Mayor Tomas Osmeña’s green light before installing the 586 LED lights in the 29-kilometer span of the highway.

“We coordinated with Cebeco (Cebu Electric Company), the electric company servicing the south, to light up the span of the Transcentral Highway from the boundary between Balamban town and Cebu City going up until (Sitio) Cantipla (of Barangay Tubunan),” said Cabarrubias.

Cabarrubias said not a single light post has been erected in the area, making the highway prone to vehicular accidents at night.

“Light is very essential to our lives especially in the evening. I passed by the Transcentral Highway one time, pwerte man gyong ngitngita (and it was so dark),” Cabarrubias said.

Cabarrubias, who is also an electrical engineer, said that the installation of the light posts will be the counterpart of the electric company.

However, the recurring charges for the electrical consumption of the light posts will be charged to DPS.

“Safety na ta kung ikaw magabiyahe og gabii, di naka kuyawan (It will now be safe for us to travel at night. We will no longer fear for our safety),” he said.

Cabarrubias said they have surveyed the area and found out that some posts owned by a telecommunications company have been erected in the area and could be utilized as light posts.

He said they already have the go signal from the telecommunications company to install the LED lights on the posts.
