Cancelled Again

For the second time this week, the Department of Education (DepEd) Cebu City Division suspended the 23rd Cebu City Olympics.

Games were supposed to resume yesterday after DepEd officials initially postponed the games last Thursday due to supertyphoon “Yolanda.”

But after learning that some of the playing venues are currently being used as evacuation centers for Cebuano typhoon victims, they decided to suspend the division meet anew. The organizers, though, are looking to start the games today.

“The venues are safe and sound but a lot of our fellow Cebuanos made it their temporary shelter because of the typhoon and most of them did not go back to their houses,” Gocotano said.

Gocotano added that DepEd and tournament directors are going to hold a series of meetings to discuss modifications that need to made on the schedule of the five-day multi-sporting event. “We will meet so that we can come up a plan on how we will adjust the schedules of the competition.”

One of the venues that was used for an evacuation center was the Mambaling Sports Complex, which was supposed to host indoor sporting events.

Gocotano also said one of the reasons why they decided to postpone the games is because some of the student athletes have not been in touch with their coaches since Friday.

“A lot of coaches also contacted me to say that they are having difficulty keeping in touch with their athletes,” Gocotano added.
