MABANO SLAY
The person seen on the CCTV footage shooting Kalunasan Barangay Councilor Roel Mabano remains unidentified.
“We’re considering that perhaps this is work related especially that he is a government official. We are also considering his track record, being a former policeman. Maybe he apprehended some drug personalities before, who might have sought vengeance,” said Supt. Ruan Devaras, chief of the Cebu City Police Office — Investigation and Detective Management Branch (IDMB).
Mabano had just attended a council session and was walking in front of a tent in front of the barangay hall, when a lone assailant suddenly appeared and shot him several times, as shown on the footage of the closed-circuit television (CCTV) installed in front of the barangay hall.
Mabano, tried to run away but was shot several more times by the assailant. The gunman also chased the other people in the vicinity, waving his gun at them before he fleeing the crime scene on board a motorcycle.
Devaras said that they are already investigating if the gunman was living in a nearby community.
Senior Insp. Eduardo Sanchez, Guadalupe police precinct chief, said Mabano was formerly assigned at the Cebu City Anti-Illegal Drugs Special Operations Team before being relieved from his post and transferred to Mindanao along with other policemen in Cebu who were believed to be involved in the narcotics trade.
“We received information that he (Mabano) was a narco-cop although we have to validate that yet. The investigation is ongoing,” Sanchez said.
Last May, Mabano ran for barangay councilor of Kalunasan and won.
