Unbeaten Talisay starts championship showdown with San Francisco

UNBEATEN so far in twelve games in the 2018 Cebu Governor’s Cup Inter-Cities/Municipalities Basketball Tournament, one would think the Talisay City Aquastars are heavy favorites going into their best-of-three championship showdown against San Francisco.

But Talisay head coach Rey Gurrea is not quite convinced his team will have a clear path to the title.

“I’ve seen how determined San Francisco was during their series with Consolacion, and I’ve seen how their teamwork became so effective. So it’s going to be one hell of a fight,” Gurrea said as his team begins its title fight against San Francisco tonight at the Talisay City Sports Complex.

Tip off is at 7 p.m.

Talisay breezed through the South Division Finals, needing only two games to dispatch the Sibonga Pillars.

San Francisco had to go through a thrilling Game 3 to dethrone North division champion Consolacion Sarok Weavers last Friday night at the Cebu Coliseum.

Gurrea said he is hoping his squad will continue to show the winning mentality that allowed them to string up 12 straight wins in this prestigious tournament.

“What makes us an unbeaten team is that we never let ourselves get beaten. We always have that mentality to win no matter what, maybe that’s our edge against [San Francisco],” he said.

Game 1 of the Finals will be broadcast live at Cebu Daily News’ Facebook page via the Cebu Sports Live.
