NBI autopsy eyed for remains of former judge’s son

A retired judge whose adopted son died in a shootout with police in Barangay San Lorega, Cebu City last July 20 will ask the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to conduct a new autopsy on his son’s remains.

Former judge Gerardo Gestopa Jr. of the Municipal Trial Court of Cities in the City of Naga, south Cebu, is not convinced with the results of the autopsy on his adopted son Gerwin.

The autopsy was performed by Dr. Benjamin Lara, medico-legal-officer of the Police Regional Office (PRO-7).

“We are not satisfied with the results of the autopsy which only took 30 minutes. A lot of people said the autopsy didn’t cover everything because it would usually take two to three hours,” he said in a phone interview.

He said the autopsy result showed Gerwin died of a gunshot wound. But Gestopa believed his son was tortured before he was shot dead by police. Gestopa said his son lost some teeth and there were bruises on his knees and eye.

Chief Insp. Kenneth Paul Albotra, Parian police precinct chief, said Gerwin aimed his gun at one of the policemen but his weapon didn’t go off. Gestopa admitted that his son was a user not a pusher.
