DESPITE the alarming number of shooting incidents in Cebu in the past month, some foreign participants of the Regent Aguila Ironman 70.3 Asia Pacific Championships are not worried about their safety.
American Harry Barnes, who is joining for the first time, said the hospitality of Cebuanos has somehow overshadowed the news of killings in Cebu.
“The people have been great,” he said. “I can see security officers around the place so I think there is nothing to worry about.”
Aussie Jared Hauschildt, whose wife is joining this Sunday’s race, echoed Barnes’ sentiments.
“I see no reason not to (feel safe). Things are going great so far,” he said.
Richardson Bailey, also an American, is optimistic about the security of the race but is still hoping nothing bad happens on race day.
“We’ll hope it won’t come down to such. Nothing happened so far. I wish nothing like that (killings) will happen in the event,” Bailey said.
The prestigious triathlon starts and ends at the Shangri-La’s Mactan Resort and Spa on Sunday.
