Filipino Olay wins 4th Singapore chess title

SINGAPORE — Filipino International Master (IM) elect Edgar Reggie Olay continued his winning streak after beating Malaysian Lim Chin Lee in the ninth and final round to rule the 30th (Singapore) National Rapid Chess Championships 2018 Open Division last Sunday.

The Davao City and Kidapawan City pride Olay finished with 8.0 points in nine outings in the event organized by the Singapore Chess Federation with International Organizer (IO) Thomas Hoe as tournament director and International Arbiter (IA) Nisban Jasmin as Chief Arbiter.

He beat Joel Yi Herng Ong of Singapore in the first round, Candidate Master (CM) Lee Jun Wei of Singapore in the second round, International Master (IM) Zhen Yu Cyrus Low of Singapore in the third round, Kirill Surin of Belarus in the fourth round, Fide Master (FM) Qing Aun Lee of Singapore in the sixth round, Fide Master Fernandez Gervasio Calderon of Argentina in the seventh round, International Master Enrique Paciencia of the Philippines in the eight round before beating Lim Chin Lee of Malaysia in the final round.

His only setback was against countryman Grandmaster (GM) Buenaventura “Bong” Villamayor in the fifth round.
