THE UNIVERSITY of Cebu (UC) Webmasters are gearing up for a physical encounter today when they face off against the University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors in the 2018 Cesafi men’s basketball tournament at the Cebu Coliseum.
Unbeaten so far this season after sweeping the first round (6-0), which they capped off with a hard-earned 55-45 win over the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Panthers, UC head coach Yayoy Alcoseba is not allowing his team to rest on their laurels as they take on a USC team that is trying to get on track this season.
“We’re only as good as our last game. We are ready for a physical game against USC,” said the multi-titled head coach.
In the main game of the quadruple header, the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars seek a repeat of their first round win over the two-time defending champions University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers.
USJ-R, sitting at second place with a 5-1 (win-loss) card after the first round, bested UV, 89-73, during opening weekend.
Jaguars head coach Leode Garcia opted to keep his cards close to his chest but shared that they will be focusing more on the defensive end of the floor against a Green Lancers squad that just got back team captain, Josue Segumpan, Jr., who missed three straight games because of an illness.
UV kicked off their second round in victorious fashion, creaming the Southwestern University (SWU) – Phinma Cobras, 70-51, on Thursday, to raise its record to 4-3.
In high school action, the USPF Baby Panthers downed the Don Bosco Greywolves, 58-44, behind the near double-double performance of point guard Neon Chavez, who had 13 points and eight rebounds along with two assists and a steal.
The UC Baby Webmasters also beat the USJ-R Baby Jaguars, 65-58.
USPF now holds an even 2-2 record while Don Bosco remains winless in four games.
