Defending men’s football champs off to good start

FIVE-TIME Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (Cesafi) men’s football champions University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors opened their campaign for a sixth title with a 1-0 edging of University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters Sunday afternoon at the Cebu City Sports Center.

Also successfully opening its campaign this season is the University of the Visayas (UV), which scored a 3-1 routing of the University of San Jose Recoletos (USJ-R).

The Warriors’ lone goal was scored by Pyke Tinoy in the 29th minute. The Webmasters had several attempts but were never able to convert them to goals.

In the first game, last season’s golden boot awardee John Vargas opened the scoring for UV by immediately scoring a brace.

Vargas found the back of the net in the 32nd minute and in the 71st minute. His teammate, John Mansueto, chipped in a goal in the 56th minute.

The Jaguars avoided a shutout courtesy of Aljun Tedera, who scored in the 76th minute.

The first round of the Collegiate division will resume this Wednesday, October 3, at the same venue with UV hoping to go on a win streak against UC at 1 p.m. and USJ-R hoping to bag its first win at the expense of University of Southern Philippines Foundation, the perennial runner-up, in the second game.
