‘Out of focus’ USC falters against USJ-R

UNLUCKY. This is how University of San Carlos (USC) women’s volleyball head coach Grace Antigua described their game against her former team, the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R), in the Cesafi volleyball tournament yesterday at the Southwestern University (SWU)-Phinma Gym.

The USJ-R Lady Jaguars, now coached by former USC mentor Norvie Labuga, swept the Lady Warriors, 25-18, 27-25, 25-20.

It was the first win for USJ-R this season while USC dropped to 1-1 (win-loss) after opening the season with a win over the Cebu Institute of Technology-University (CIT-U).

“We were taken by surprise by their floater services,” Antigua told Cebu Daily News. “The players were also driven by their urge to win during the game, which caused them to lose focus.”

But Antigua remains positive despite the loss, saying the team is still eyeing to make it to the top four this season.

“We will focus more, practice more and I will look for more ways to motivate the players,” said the legendary mentor who is in her first year with the USC volleyball team.

In girls’ high school games, SWU-Phinma crushed Cebu Doctors’ University (CDU), 25-11, 25-8; USC toppled Cebu Eastern College (CEC), 25-6, 25-10; and USJ-R won against Ateneo, 26-24, 25-16.

In the boys’ side, SWU-Phinma defeated CDU, 25-11, 25-19; USJ-R downed Ateneo, 25-12, 25-19; UC won against Don Bosco Technical College (DBTC), 25-19, 25-15; and USC routed Cebu Institute of Technology- University (CIT-U), 25-8, 25-13.
