Construction of Cebu Province Sports Complex underway, set to finish in March 2019

Come March 2019, Cebu Province’s athletes will soon have a place to call their home.

Cebu Province governor Hilario “Jun-jun” Davide III yesterday led the groundbreaking ceremony of the P20-million Cebu Province Sports Complex in Sudlon, Barangay Lahug, Cebu City, which is expected to be completed in around five months.

For Governor Davide III, he believes that this is the best way to give recognition to Cebuano athletes who consistently represent the Cebu Province in various meets in and outside Cebu.

“I feel that we need a place for them, a facility that’s big where they can train and play,” the governor said.

Aside from catering to the province’s athletes, the governor also said that the facility can be used for other purposes.

“We can also use this for our annual sports fest. It can be income generating because private groups can rent this for their tournaments,” Davide said.

Joining Davide III during the groundbreaking ceremony was Cebu Provincial Sports Commission (CPSC) executive Director Ramil P. Abing, DepEd Cebu Province Physical Education and School Sports (PESS) division coordinator Nenita Jaralve and other stakeholders.

Expansion

The Cebu Province Sports Complex will be equipped with two standard-sized basketball courts that can be converted into different courts for other sports.

It also has its own table tennis facility, a training center with gym equipment, and weightlifting facility.

After the sports facility will be completed, they are also planning to have an expansion to construct the athletes’ quarters.

If this will be completed, this will serve as Cebu Province’s fully operational sports facility and training center, which aims to boost the performance of

Cebu Province’s athletes in various meets in and outside Cebu in the coming years.

According to Abing, the facility sits in a one-hectare lot.

The entire sports facility is 36 meters by 60 meters.

“Hopefully, by March, we can inaugurate the facility. We have to focus on this before the change of administration,” said Abing.

The next local election is slated May 13, 2019.

The construction of the sports facility will be a huge boost for CPSC’s goal to organize a unified training program for Cebu Province’s athletes.

It will be CPSC’s satellite office, apart from the main office located at the Cebu Province’s legislative building in the Capitol compound.

One of the main reasons why CPSC and the Cebu Province government decide to construct this sports facility is to strengthen their unified training program to boost the performances of their athletes in various meets.

Another program that helps that goal is the holding of the Governor’s Cup Inter-Cities/Municipalities basketball and volleyball tournament.
