UV’s football team motivated by admin support this year

The support that the University of the Visayas (UV) is giving to all of its sports teams this year is starting to pay off.

Its men’s football team, for example, is showing signs of success in the ongoing Cesafi football tournament, taking the top spot after a 1-0 victory over defending champion University of San Carlos (USC) Wednesday afternoon at the Cebu City Sports Center.

“They are so motivated because of the support of the UV administration and also of Congressman Samsam (Cebu Province 1st District Representative Samsam Gullas),” said UV athletic director Chris Mejarito.

According to UV head coach Alex Ballesteros, this season is the first time that the Green Booters are at the top in the elimination round.

The former national player said that the team is inspired especially since there is always school representative present during their games.

Kenneth Vargas scored the winning goal for UV in the 40th minute, bringing his total number of goals this season to five so far.

With two more games remaining for UV in the second round of eliminations, Vargas is on track to collect his third straight Golden Boot award of the league.

UV tied its victims with 10 points but the Green Booters took the top spot due to a higher goal difference.

The other match saw the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Panthers score a 2-1 win against the University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters.
