COA approves CCMC demolition

THE demolition of the condemned Cebu City Medical Center (CCMC) may now push through with the approval of the Commission on Audit (COA).

“We already received communication from COA on the CCMC demolition and they interposed no objection with the city’s plan,” City Attorney Jerone Castillo told Cebu Daily News.

The CCMC ad hoc committee has tasked Castillo to follow up with COA.

Two weeks ago, a team from COA inspected the CCMC building. The agency sent an inspection report to the city government.

Councilor Mary Ann delos Santos, the CCMC ad hoc committee head, said they will meet today to decide on the exact date for the building’s demolition. She said earlier that the demolition will be within the month of February.

COA’s approval was the only thing that the ad hoc committee lacked to push through with the demolition because the Office of the Building Official already issued a permit to demolish.

The 45-year-old CCMC building was declared “unfit for occupancy” by structural engineers after the 7.2-magnitude earthquake on October 15 last year.

Meanwhile, Delos Santos said they already “accepted” that they won’t be receiving any insurance for the CCMC building.

“We are ready of the fate of CCMC that we won’t be getting any insurance. It’s a sad story but I’m pleased that all is going well with COA,” Delos Santos told CDN.

Insurance documents from the General Services Office showed that the CCMC building’s insurance from the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) only covers “fires and lightnings.”
