UV not giving up just yet against SWU

Cesafi men’s volleyball finals

Being down 0-1 against a strong team like Southwestern University (SWU)-PHINMA in a best-of-three finals series could be very frustrating.

The Cobras are the defending champions and they will surely be going for the kill in Game 2 of the Cesafi men’s volleyball finals this Saturday at the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) gym.

But the University of the Visayas (UV) isn’t losing hope just yet.

In fact, the Green Lancers are ready to go all out in the hopes of forcing a rubbermatch.

“Since we were given the chance to be among the top four again, then we will fight up to the end,” said UV head coach Raffy Briones.

“We will give our best in Game 2.”

The Green Lancers were simply outclassed in Game 1, losing to SWU in straight sets, 26-24, 26-24, 25-21, last Sunday at the USPF gym.

But UV knows it can win against the Cobras. It beat SWU, 27-25, 22-25, 25-23, 25-16, in the semis a week before the finals.

So Briones knows that the team just needs to correct whatever they did wrong in Game 1.

“We focus more on what we missed last Game 1,” Briones said. “We will be working on blocking, hard service and defense.”

Briones said offense wasn’t really a problem in Game 1.

“It was the first touch that we were having trouble with,” he said.

UV last made it to the championship round in 2008, and Briones and his wards are hoping this year will be the year they finally make it to the top.

Game 2 of the men’s finals will start at 1:30 p.m. followed by the women’s finals at 3:30 p.m. at the USPF Gym.

The University of San Carlos leads the women’s series, 1-0, against the University of San Jose-Recoletos.
