THE UNIVERSITY of San Carlos (USC) is proving to be not only good in sporting events but in cultural as well as it topped the first batch of cultural events of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (Cesafi) last Thursday at the Cebu Institute of Technology University (CIT-U).

Aside from ruling the hip hop dance competition in the morning, USC also took the elementary and secondary titles of the vocal solo contest which was held in the afternoon.

Finishing second and third to USC in the hip hop dance contest, respectively, were University of Cebu Lapu-Lapu Mandaue (UCLM) and Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC). The hip hop dance contest was only held for the secondary division.

Unlike other inter-school leagues such as the UAAP and the NCAA, Cesafi also holds competitions in academics and cultural, not just sporting events competition.

“That is part of the objective of the Cesafi. We don’t just provide the students with physical activities but also with activities that test their mental capabilities,” said Cesafi commissioner Felix “Boy” Tiukinhoy.

The academic and cultural events competition was supposed to open last November 20, but was rescheduled to November 22 due to Tropical Depression Samuel.

Aside from hip hop and vocal solo, other academic and cultural events to be contested are vocal duet, current events and general info, math quiz, science quiz, spelling contest, duet, essay writing, declamation, sudoku, oration, impromptu, balak/sangka sa panulong and robotics. All of these will be contested next year starting in January.
