The Cebu City Sports Commission has added another event as part of its year-long agenda of staging the barangay grassroots sports programs starting April 21 up to May 22.
CCSC chairman Edward Hayco told Cebu Daily News on Monday they added indoor soccer to the CCSC’s summer sports program aimed towards the development of the grassroots level athletes in the different barangays of Cebu City.
“We will offer indoor soccer during our summer grassroots sports program this coming April,” Hayco said.
The indoor soccer will be added to the upcoming development program specifically targeted towards beach volleyball in the grassroots level and the other sporting events earlier identified by the CCSC, including the revival of the indigenous games such as takyan, bacol-bacol, biko-biko, tubig-tubig and the Japanese garter.
The CCSC is also planning to hold culmination competitions in each of the program’s sports at its respective venues.
Hayco added that in order to sustain the barangay grassroots sports development program, it will be staged every three months until yearend.
The revival of the indigenous games, according to Hayco, isn’t only to rekindle the youth’s interest in the games but it will also serve to develop the different reflexes of the athletes.
The beach volleyball, on the other hand, is aimed towards sharpening the skills of the players and at the same time develop the sport on a grassroots level.
Through this program, Hayco said they can identify the athletes worthy to be sent to the Asian games in the hopes of qualifying for the 2016 Olympics.
“We will be having the beach volleyball developmental competition and Olympic qualifying tournament soon. It will be a series of six competitions in one year to sharpen the skills and at the same time develop the sports (beach volleyball) on a grassroots level,” Hayco said earlier.
