CEBU CITY, Philippines – For the athletes of Cebu Province to get better, a unified training program and a facility for such are among the things needed.
The Department of Education (DepEd) Cebu Province believes these are the key ingredients needed to bolster Cebu Province’s chances multi-sporting meets such as the Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association (CVIRAA) Meet.
But the budget for the training and the venue is the problem.
“Di sad jud ingon nga makahold ang province ug unified training coz walay facility or budget for training,” said Nenita Jaralve, the Cebu Provincial Schools division coordinator.
(It’s not as if the province can hold a unified training because there is no facility or budget for training.)
Currently, the Cebu Province school division is receiving funding from the local government of the Cebu Province that it uses for uniforms, training, food, transportation and equipment.
For this year, they received P12,572,000 from Cebu Province for the entire Cebu provincial delegation.
Jaralve and Dr. Cartesa M. Perico, OIC, Assistant Schools Division Superintendent who will serve as the team manager of the Cebu Province delegation, are also looking forward to the sports complex, the building of which is being spearheaded by the Cebu Provincial Sports Commission (CPSC) headed by executive director, Atty. Ramil Abing.
“Nindot sad na nga naay facility ana for development of sports ba para sa mga bata. Basin anha ng panahona nga ma centralize na ang training kay maka accommodate sa among mga bata ba, nya ang amo na lang ku-anonon nya ana kay accommodation sa mga bata in terms sa training period,” said Perico.
(It is nice to have a facility like that for the development of sports for the kids. Maybe by then we can have a centralized training as the facility can accommodate our kids and what we will take care of is their billeting during the period of training.)
Both Jaralve and Perico hope they will have a budget to hire trainers who will be dedicated in training the student athletes.
“Kani man gud, public teachers man gud ni ang coaches so magklase pa sila unya nigkahuman magcoach nya usahay after school lang na ila training sa mga bata pero bisan ing-ana maka produce man gihapon sila ug best athletes,” said Jaralve.
(Our coaches are the public teachers, so they hold classes first then coach after, so often they hold training after school but even with that, they are able to produce best athletes.)
According to Jaralve, most of the best athletes produced even get scholarships to private schools in Cebu City and Manila.
Both DepEd officials are hoping that DepEd and the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) through the CPSC could help them in these aspect as well as conducting proper training for teacher coaches.
Cebu Province finished fifth in last year’s CVIRAA. Its best finish is second place. /bmjo
