UP Cebu marks Women’s Month Activities

ACTIVITIES FOR THE MONTH-LONG CELEBRATION INCLUDE POETRY READING, FORUM, MARCH RALLY

An afternoon of performances featuring UP Serenata, poetry reading from Tinta, inspirational and solidarity messages from the administration, student organizations, environmentalist and GAD champions representing civil society groups and agencies kicked off the opening of Women’s Month celebration in UP Cebu yesterday.

UP Cebu Dean Lisa Corro and Councilor Lea Japson, chairperson of the Committee on Women and Children, were among the invited speakers.

A parade around the campus preceded the cultural event at the UP Cebu Oblation Square in the afternoon.

SayawE led the One Billion Rising Dance and the Zumba-han after the program.

The theme for this year is “Juana, ang Tatag Mo ay Tatag Natin sa Pagbangon at Pagsulong!”

Dr. Rhodora Bucoy, coordinator of the Gender and Development (GAD) office, lined up a series of activities for the month-long celebration.

The National Service Training Program headed by Prof. Phoebe Zoe Sanchez will hold a  Women’s March Rally tomorrow morning.

A forum, co-sponsored by Sidlak Gender Resource Center 7, on “Women in Disaster and the Continuing Disaster of Trafficking of Girls for Cyber Sex and Pornography in

Cebu” will be held on March 12 at 1 p.m. at the university’s audiovisual room.

Speakers include Prof. Kaira Zoe Cañete of the UP Cebu Social Sciences Cluster, Portia Dacalos of the Philippine Guidance Counselors Association and Senior

Superintendent Ma. Theresa Macatangay of the Regional Anti-Human Trafficking Task Force – Central Visayas.

Solidarity fellowship of Sidlak partners and the unveiling of the mural and art exhibits of the Fine Arts class of Prof. Palmy Pe-Tudtud will follow.

On March 29, a public service program, “One Stop Shop for Women: Halad sa Kababayen-an,” will culminate the celebration at the Arts and Sciences lobby.

The Halad sa Kababayen-an will include cervical cancer screening for women, counseling, healing massage, women’s bazaar, free skills training on the use of internet technology for social advocacy and consultation on birth records problems. These services will be offered by collaborating agencies like the UP Cebu Health Services and Computing Services Unit, Women’s Resource Center Visayas, Legal Alternatives for Women, Philippine Statistics Authority and the Department of Social Welfare and Development in Central Visayas.

Other activities include a series of gender sensitivity trainings spearheaded by the Office of Student Affairs Guidance Counseling Services and the Office of Anti-Sexual Harassment for the All UP Workers Union admin members and students and photo exhibits on the Lives of Women by the High School Photojournalism class.
