Governor’s Cup basketball: Talisay, Minglanilla move on

Cebu City, Philippines—Defending champions Talisay City Aquastars and the Minglanilla Archangels are off to the next round of the 2019 Governor’s Cup basketball tournament after they upended their respective opponents in the games on Saturday, March 30, 2019, at the San Fernando Gym.

Talisay, which is fresh off a shocking loss at the hands of Carcar, defeated the San Fernando Spartans, 74-63. 

Keaton Taburnal led the way for the Aquastars with 16 points in the easy win. 

Meanwwhile, Minglanilla blew out Sibonga, 101-57.

While Talisay breezed through to the next round with their 4-1 win-loss record, Minglanilla had to go through the eye of the needle as it ended up tied for second place with Naga and Carcar. 

The quotient system was used to break the tie and when all was calculated by tournament officials, Minglanilla came away with the highest quotient of 1.036, narrowly beating out Naga’s 1.032 and Carcar’s 0.93.

Elsewhere, moving on in the 2nd District were Argao and Samboan, both of whom held identical 4-1 cards.

Argao handily took care of Santander, 80-69, in front of their home fans to formalize their entry in the next round.

Advancing in the 3rd District were Tuburan and Balamban.
