Cebu City, Philippines — Versatile wingman John Reel Saycon is setting his sights on making it to the roster of the Cebu City Sharks-Casino Ethyl Alcohol.
A player coveted by Sharks head coach Titing Manalili as early as last year, Saycon has already been given the blessings of University of San Carlos (USC) head coach Bong Abad to proceed with the next chapter of his basketball career even though the 6-foot-1 combo guard still has one playing year left.
Ranged against a healthy mix of veterans and new blood composed of current and former Cesafi players, the native of Pamplona, Negros Oriental said that he is ready to compete at the level of the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League after a successful Cesafi career that saw him get selected to the Mythical Five back in 2017.
In spite of his pedigree, Saycon said he still had butterflies in his stomach upon seeing the throng of players that trooped to the Capitol Parish gym to try their luck at making it to Cebu City’s team.
“I felt nervous because there were a lot who joined the tryout. I realized that it won’t be easy getting into the Cebu City Sharks roster. At the same time, I’m happy that I am able to show the talent given to me by God,” said Saycon.
As it is, Saycon’s chances of making it to the Sharks remain rosy, especially with most of the team’s players’ contracts expiring next month.
