Cebu City, Philippines — Carmen snatched the lead in the standings of the 9th Congressman Red Durano Cup basketball tournament after crushing Borbon, 89-66, on Tuesday, April 9, 2019, at the latter’s home court in Barangay Cadaruhan.
Carmen proved to be rude visitors as they turned it up in the third period, outscoring Borbon, 36-17, to take a 37-38 halftime deficit into a 73-55 lead heading to the fourth period.
John Banzon led Carmen in scoring with 23 points with Kenneth Watin sizzled from beyond the arc and drained five three-pointers en route to tallying 18 points.
More importantly, Carmen moved into solo first place with their 5-0 win-loss record.
Borbon dropped to 2-2. Klarenz Sonsona scored 18 points for the home team.
In the other game, Liloan improved to 3-2 with an 86-72 win over Sogod.
Liloan got off to a fast start, led 27-18 after the first canto and never looked back in the wire-to-wire victory.
Jethro Tautho led Liloan with 29 points while Marc dela Cerna added 16.
Sogod fell to 1-3 in this competition. /bmjo
