CEBU CITY, Philippines–Amid continued campaign against illegal refilling and sale of butane canisters, the Department of Energy (DOE) has certified the first safe cylinder as an alternative.

The certified cylinder launched by the Philippines Eco-gas Producers Cooperative (PEPC) is a refillable welded stainless steel cylinder.

This cylinder is considered as the safest solutions to butane canister being refilled with LPG.

In a statement, former DOE Visayas Field Office director Saul Gonzales commended PEPC’s initiative because it could help put a stop to the use of LPG-refilled butane canisters.

“The Philippine Eco-gas has applied for Standards Compliance Certification (SCC),” Gonzales said.

He explained that the PEPC cylinders could withstand the pressure of LPG and is also refillable.

According to Gonzales, PEPC is the first one to sell safe cylinders for LPG refilling.

He noted that the old butane canisters are dangerous because these could not withstand the pressure of LPG and could result to combustion.

The butane canisters, Gonzales said, could only be used once because there is a possibility that it would explode.

Jose Rey Maleza, officer-in-charge of DOE Energy Industry Management Division, called on retailers and dealers to apply for SSC so they could sell LPG PEPC cylinders./dcb
