CEBU CITY, Philippines — The Cebu City Environment and Natural Resources Office (Cenro) urged the public to be mindful of their trash during the Holy Week and keep the streets clean after the religious activities.

Cenro Head Nida Cabrera said people should bring their own trash bags to keep themselves from throwing garbage anywhere especially since most people would be traveling on these days.

Cabrera also encouraged the devotees to use eco-bags to carry their things and bring reusable containers for their food and water to avoid single-use plastics.

She said the city will need the discipline and cooperation of the public during these days when barangay environment officers (BEO) will not be apprehending violators.

“Nihangyo sila (BEO) nga adto lang sa sila sa ilang mga barangays aron makapahuway. Dili sila manakop, mamadlong ra sila,” said Cabrera.

(They requested that they will stay in their home barangays to rest. They will not be issuing citations but will continue to remind the public about throwing garbage properly.)

Cabrera said the public has to do their “fair share” of sacrifice by being responsible for their trash.

She warned that dumping trash anywhere can become hazardous since accumulated trash might cause  fire especially during the summer season.

Cabrera hopes that the public would cooperate in keeping the city clean during the commemoration of the Holy Week. / celr
