TRAFFIC was snarled at the foot of the Marcelo Fernan Bridge after a 40-foot container van was uncoupled from a trailer truck past noon yesterday.

The driver of the trailer truck, Avelino Cupta, 33, of barangay Kalunasan, Cebu City escaped unhurt.

The trailer, owned by JS Lobetania Trucking Services, came from the Cebu International Port (CIP) in Cebu City and was to transport the container van loaded with used clothing to a company at the Mactan Export Processing Zone 2 in barangay Basak, Lapu-Lapu  City.

Cupta said he lost control of the wheel when one of the left rear tires exploded.

The trailer then tilted to one side causing the container van to outbalance and fall, damaging the  monument of the late Chief Justice Marcelo Fernan.

Traffic personnel from Lapu-Lapu City rushed to the area to direct traffic.

Traffic police issued Cupta a temporary operator’s permit (TOP) and confiscated his license for reckless driving.
