Phivolcs upgrades Eastern Samar earthquake to magnitude 6.5; Intensity 3 felt in Cebu

 

(Updated) Cebu City, Philippines—A magnitude 6.5 earthquake of tectonic origin rocked San Julian in Eastern Samar on Tuesday afternoon, April 23, 2019.

In a report released by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), the earthquake happened at 1:37 p.m. on Tuesday.

Intensity 5 was felt in Tacloban City, Catbalogan City, and Samar. Intensity 4 was felt in Masbate City, Legazpi City and Sorsogon City.

Cebu also felt an intensity 3 quake.

Aftershocks were reported shortly after.

A magnitude 3.3 aftershock was reported at 1:49 p.m. in San Julian. A magnitude 2.1 quake also rocked Western Samar at 2:15 p.m. while a 4.6 rocked Borongan Eastern Samar and Catbalogan, Samar at 2:41 p.m.
