Island Paints still spotless in Corporate Cup

Cebu City, Philippines—Island Paints kept its unbeaten record intact after it beat Phoenix Building System, 89-78, in the Architects + Engineers Basketball Club 2019 Corporate Cup last Saturday, May 4, 2019, at the University of San Carlos gym.

Island Paints seized control of the lead in the second as it outscored Phoenix, 25-11, to turn a slim 25-23 advantage into a 50-34 lead at halftime. Island Paints did not look back any longer after it surged ahead.

Ralph Catugas led the way for Island Paints, with 23 points while Chester Hinagdanan and John Famoso put up 15 markers each to help the team boost its record to 4-0 (win-loss) and hand Phoenix its first loss in four games.

Phoenix’s loss allowed two teams to forge a three-way toe for second place as Thinking Tools Inc. and Toyota Mabolo logged in wins over their respective opponents last Saturday.

Thinking Tools downed the reigning champions Filmon Dormakaba, 74-61, as big men Patrick Paran and Arnel Cordero sizzled with 19 and 16 points, respectively. 

Paran also had 13 rebounds to send Filmon Dormakaba to its third loss in four matches.

Toyota, on the other hand, outclassed AVC Development and Construction Company, 70-64, as former M. Lhuillier standout Jett Latonio waxed hot with 23 points.

Davies Paints, meanwhile, evened its record up at 2-2 with a dominant 74-47 win over Buildrite.

Buildrite and AVC remain winless in four games so far in this competition. /bmjo
