CEBU CITY, Philippines— A group of visual artists are paying it forward to their local community by offering a free art workshop to kids.

Three visual artists from Asylum De Busay have decided to let their love for art resonate in the kids of their barangay in Busay.

Mark “Kidlat” Copino, Khriss Bajade and Wyndelle Remonde are the artists who aspire to help these kids realize their potential in art.

“We just want to be involved in the community that surrounds our communal studio space. Our means, as artists, is by sharing our talent to the locals and to educate them about art,” said Remonde in an interview with CDN Digital.

Yesterday, May 6 was the start of the free art workshop which is up until May 18, 2019.

Classes are 2 hours and 30 minutes long and are divided by age bracket, for Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays it is from 9:00-11:30 a.m., for 4 to 14- year-old children. Then on Tuesdays and Thursdays it will be from 2:00 to 4:30 p.m. for 14 to 18-year-old participants.

The workshop happens inside a small house, which they rented to make it look like an art studio that can cater to the 15 children and youth members who are enrolled in our free art workshop.

“Nag post ra mi og karatola sa gawas sa studio saying nga nag offer mi og free worshops. Pls inquire inside. Diin nag palista sila. Naa man sad gud mi gibuhat nga artist-run gallery here. Gamay ra gud siya para lang mo showcase og mga up and coming artists nga dili pa confident kaayo sa ilang works nga i show sa big galleries. Para lang i boost ilang confidence. Nya, mang invite mi og locals nga mo tan aw sa exhibit,” he said.

(We only posted a sign outside the studio announcing our free workshops and for those interested to inquire inside, where the participants registered for the activity. In the studio, we are working on an artist-run gallery. It’s just a small one. It’s just to showcase up and coming artists who are not confident in displaying their works in big galleries. This is just to boost their confidence. Then we invite local community to look at the exhibit.)

The free art workshop that they do for the kids and youth in Busay is their way of educating these kids about art and to also share their talents as artists to these kids who might also be artists themselves in the future./dbs
