Cebu City, Philippines—With a new administration set to take over Cebu Province, the flagship project of the Cebu Provincial Sports Commission (CPSC) — the Governor’s Cup 2019 Inter-Cities/Municipalities Basketball Tournament — remains in limbo.
CPSC executive director, Lawyer Ramil Abing, confirmed this during an interview on Thursday morning, May 16, 2019.
“The Guv Cup is a program of Davide administration. I would not know for sure what will be the sports program of the incoming governor. It will be their discretion to establish their sports program,” said Abing, referring to outgoing Cebu Provincial Governor, Junjun Davide, who established this tournament back in 2017.
Minglanilla won the inaugural staging of the tournament while Talisay City has won the title in each of the last two years, just recently defeating Mandaue City to emerge as the 2019 champions.
Abing also said that his term and that of the rest of the staff of the CPSC is set to expire at the end of June, which definitely means changes in personnel are forthcoming.
Nevertheless, he is hoping that regardless who will be placed in charge of the CPSC will keep the program going under the leadership of incoming Cebu Provincial Governor, Gwendolyn Garcia.
“It’s a program that gained support from several cities and municipalities and helped a lot of people especially the young basketball athletes,” Abing shared. /bmjo
