Pagasa Mactan says transition in season to bring hot days and cold nights

CEBU CITY, Philippines –Brace yourselves for “very” hot morning and cold/wet nights.

Romeo Aguirre of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) Mactan office said that nights will now be colder with some rain showers as we transition from the very hot season into the rainy season.

He said that temperature could go to as low as 25 degrees Celsius at night.

Aguirre told CDN Digital that as the south westerlies winds has started to dominate the weather system in the country to bring in moist air that may cause moderate to heavy rains and occasional thunderstorms at night.

But the high temperature will continue to prevails at daytime as a result of the El Niño phenomenon. During the day, temperature can go as high as 34 degrees Celsius.

Pagasa Mactan also recorded a temperature of 34 degrees Celsius in Metro Cebu area as of noontime today, May 18, with a heat index ranging from 39 to 40 degrees Celsius.

Aguirree is asking Cebuanos to also carry an umbrella when they leave their homes to protect themselves form the heat of the sun and the occasional thunderstorms.

He also warned especially those who live in low lying areas to prepare for the possible occurrence of flooding that may result from heavy downpour.

There is a big possibility for rain to pour in Metro Cebu’s mountain barangays today as dark clouds have started to form in these areas.

Aguirre said that the El Niño phenomenon that is now causing water shortage in Cebu and other parts of Central Visayas is already expected to dissipate starting next month. Rainfall is expected to already return to its normal level of 108 millimeters by then.

“This will already ease the water shortage in Metro Cebu,” he said.

As of May 18, Pagasa Mactan only recorded 7.9 millimeters of rainfall which is way below its normal level. / celr
