MANILA, Philippines — The Philippines will experience its longest day of the year on June 21, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said.
In Pagasa’s astronomical diary, the event, known as the summer solstice, will fall on June 21 at 11:54 p.m. (Philippine Standard Time).
Pagasa said that daytime on June 21 will last for 12 hours and 59 minutes. The sun will rise at 5:28 a.m. and will set at 6:27 p.m.
Pagasa explained that the summer solstice is when the sun attains its greatest declination of +23.5 degrees and passes directly overhead at noon for all observers at latitude 23.5 degrees North, which is known as the Tropic of Cancer.
The summer solstice also marks the event of the apparent southward movement of the sun in the ecliptic, Pagasa added. (Editor: Mike U. Frialde)
