CEBU CITY, Philippines — Three days.

This will be the length of time that “stray” dogs in Toledo City will be allowed to live the moment they fall in the hands of the city pound personnel.

In a memorandum, Toledo City Mayor Marjorie Perales directed the City Veterinarian to apprehend, seize and capture any dog that is found to be astray or outside their owner’s properties.

The captured dogs will then have three days to live.

“You are all directed to dispose through euthanasia or mercy killings (under Republic Act No 8485) the impounded dogs after 3 days of their capture,” Perales’ Memorandum No. 28-2019 reads.

“In [the] case of vicious/rabies suspect dogs, they shall be disposed [of] immediately using [a] humane method,” the memorandum further reads.

The move, according to the memorandum, is in implementation of City Ordinance No. 2002-14.

As of Wednesday, August 21, some 27 dogs are in”death row” at the Toledo City pound.

With the city’s move, an animal rights advocates group in the city has posted photos of the dogs in the city pound with an “urgent call for help.”

Beyond the Breed-Toledo City wrote that Friday, August 23m is the “most dreaded day of the week” because the dogs are scheduled for euthanasia.

“According to the personnel in the pound, the killing will be performed through injection and by representatives from the PROVINCIAL VETERINARY OFFICE,” reads a Facebook post of Beyond the Breed-Toledo City.

CDN Digital reached out to Beyond the Breed-Toledo City to ask permission to use the photos they posted on their Facebook page.

“In this regard, Beyond the Breed is calling all the dog lovers, especially in Toledo City, to please step up and help these dogs. They should not have been in this situation if people have been more responsible,” the post reads.

“If you are interested in adopting, you may contact Beyond the Breed or visit the pound so you can see for yourself how desperately these dogs need your help,” the organization writes.
