The Southwestern University (SWU) Cobras marched to the championship round of the 7th Mandaue City Mayor’s Cup after defeating the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars, 78-65, in the semifinals yesterday at the Mandaue Cultural and Sports Complex.
The Cobras leaned on the inside presence of Landry Sanjo as the Cameroonian import scored 22 points, helping SWU kick off to a sizzling start.
Mark Jayven Tallo added 14 while Mohammed Adams chipped in 13 for SWU, which will face the winner between the other semis game between University of the Visayas (UV) and the National University (NU) in the finals today at 7 p.m.
The NU-UV game was being played at press time.
Sanjo set the pace for the easy win as he dominated the shaded lane early to help SWU erect a 20-13 lead after the opening period.
Adams nailed four three pointers later on to stretch the Cobras’ lead to 14 before settling for a 41-27 halftime lead.
The Jaguars cut the lead to nine in the middle of the third period but Sanjo restored order for a 67-42 lead after three quarters.
The Jaguars managed to inch closer again, this time slicing the lead to 13 but they ran out of time as the Cobras cruised to the easy victory.
James Regalado scored 11 for the Jaguars while import Emmanuel Ojoula added 10 and Raymond Catipay donated seven markers.
