Maritime police trainee drowns

A maritime police trainee drowned while swimming in the waters below the Marcelo Fernan Bridge in barangay Pusok, Lapu-Lapu City yesterday morning.

Police said initial investigation showed that there were no signs of foul play in the death of Edidon Diaz, a native of Iloilo City.

Diaz was one of at least 30 applicants housed in a bunkhouse of the Maritime Police in Central Visayas. They were scheduled to undergo a one-week training before moving to Manila office for another round of training.

The other trainees told the police that the victim didn’t complain of any illness and was known to be physically fit.

Police said Diaz and two other applicants Yasser Sausuna, 27 and David Mumbai, 21, went to the sea and took a dip at 10:45 a.m.

PO3 Lydo Pinos, homicide investigator of the Lapu-Lapu City Police Office, said the three returned to the bunkhouse after about 10 minutes.

Later, Diaz went back to the sea. Sausuna and Mumbai started looking for the victim but they could not find him.

The two applicants then reviewed the footage of a security camera.

Based on the footage, Diaz was seen swimming until he submerged and failed to resurface.
Diaz’s body was later recovered at a shallow portion of the sea.

Diaz was later brought to the Lapu-Lapu City Hospital where he was declared dead. Police said the body will be examined to determine the cause of death.
