Central Visayas athletes sizzle in basketball, volleyball, boxing

TAGUM CITY, Davao del Norte— The University of the Visayas Green Lancers (UV) powered Prisaa 7 to a rousing 119-53 victory over Region 4B yesterday during their opening match in the 2014 Prisaa National Games at the Rotary Gymnasium here.
The boys of coach Felix “Donbel” Belano led from start to finish for the easy win.
John Abad paced Prisaa 7 with 20 markers while Arvie Cabanero and Hernal Escosio added 17 and 12 respectively.
Southwestern University (SWU) also shared the spotlight yesterday after contributing a gold medal in the Oration contest over at the Buluagan Hall with Fil-British Ana Maria Stavri starring in Prisaa 7’s victory.
The 2nd year BS Pharmacy student of SWU wowed the judges with her beautiful and spellbinding oration of the 2014 Prisaa’s theme.
UC’s Cirilyn Gomez, for her part, bagged a silver medal in the Declamation contest behind a Davao Region bet.
VOLLEYBALL
In men’s volleyball, the boys of USJ-R Jaguars coach Grace Antigua bounced back from their opening day debacle by crushing luckless Region 5 (Bicol) in straight sets, 25-22, 25-16, 25-16.
BOXING
Prisaa 7 also sent three boxers into the semifinals the other day at the Tagum City Freedom Park.
Southwestern University’s Ian Refuela tallied the most impressive victory among the Cebuano pugs by scoring a technical knockout win in the 1:28 mark of the opening round in the 52-kg division.
UV’s Danlou Codilla logged a unanimous decision win in the 56-kg category while Kenneth Gentallan also of UV earned a split decision win in the youth division. /Correspondent JADE S. VIOLETA
