USC chem grad took her time to study for exam

Leslie Adolfo

Leslie Villamor Adolfo didn’t do anything special when she landed in the top 10 placers in the nationwide Chemical Engineering Licensure Exam. A cum laude graduate of the University of San Carlos, Adolfo said she’s “happy, thankful, relieved, blessed and ecstatic” over the results.

“It was hard! It came to a point where I was just hoping I could pass,” she said.

Though she expected to pass, the 22-year old only child says her ranking as the second highest licensure exam passer scoring an 81.50% rating was a pleasant surprise.

“I was 70 percent expecting to pass the exam. But being able to be the second highest rating exam-taker is a totally different story — it was God’s work,” Adolfo said.

She said she offered a silent prayer of thanks and celebrated with fellow new engineers later in the evening. The Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) said 242 out of 438 exam-takers passed.

“I started reviewing for more or less 8 months. I initially planned on taking (the Licensure exam) last November of 2013, together with the rest of my batch mates, but I decided not to. I felt like I wasn’t prepared. It was a difficult decision on my part, so when I finally decided to take the Licensure exam on April 2014, I was determined to make the best of it,” she added.

Asked to shed light on her study habits, Adolfo said she gets distracted easily. “But I know how to prioritize. I know how to evaluate the things i need to do. And when I set my goals, I do my best to achieve them,” she said.

Leslie also made mention of the things she does when taking a break, “To unwind, I eat. I watch movies. Play video games. See my friends. Play with my nieces and nephews, or play sports such as basketball or tennis.”

She said her parents are supportive but enforce rules like heading home before midnight. Adolfo’s dad works as a bus driver at USC while her mom cares for the family.

“I’m going to take a quick break first, but I’m definitely going to pursue my profession as a chemical engineer,” Adolfo said.

Asked for advice in passing the licensure or board exams, she gave these tips:

1.Make a schedule of what you need to achieve or learn.
2.Take a break once in a while. Go to the movies, watch your favorite show. Go out with friends.
3. Pray and have faith in God.
