About 180 bicycle riders sweat and sped through 20 kms of concrete road in Cebu City to mark Earth Day yesterday.
Students joined bicycle enthusiasts and ecology advocates in riding from West Gorordo Hotel on Gorordo Avenue to Osmeña Boulevard, then Escario Avenue and back to the hotel.
The activity was moved from thePosts Earth Day date of April 22 to yesterday to maximize participation over the weekend.
The hotel also launched its bike parking area in the premises which has racks where users can leave their bicycles.
“We ride on the street to show the bike as a weapon of climate change. It also addresses health and social issues,” stewarding officer Edna Lee said.
The activity was dubbed “Tindak Sugbo Bike Ride: Bike-friendly Cebu”.
Cebu City Councilor Nida Cabrera, who chairs the environment committee, said the city’s proposed biking ordinance has drawn support from various sectors.
“The ordinance is about sharing lanes,” she said.
“It’s more about prioritization of lanes. If there’s a bike, jeepneys cannot come in,” she said.
Workshops focusing on empowerment of communities in addressing climate change through permaculture and other programs were held along with seminars on renewable energy, food security and healthy lifestyles./ Xavier University Intern Kent Ugalde and Cebu Normal University Intern Anie M. Paujana
