JOSEPH Lumagod Miller will be a busy athlete in the next two months as he is expected to join two big sporting events here in Cebu.
Miller, the first-ever Cebuano pro triathlete, said he will be competing in the maiden race of the Bogo 80/80 Triathlon on May 11 in Bogo City, northern Cebu.
He is also expected to join the series-opener of the 2014 Asean Mountainbike Cup in Danao City on June 13 to 15.
The Mandaue City-native Miller is coming off from a top 6 finish in the recent cross country mountainbike race in the South Coast Mountain Biking Open Competition in Wollonggong, Australia.
Miller trained in Australia through the hospitality of triathlete Ben Allen, a two-time Xterra Philippines champion.
He survived the four-loop UCI Standard route race in Australia to finish sixth place in the competition. According to Miller, each loop measures 9.8 kilometers and they raced for four loops going uphill, downhill and amid rock gardens.
Miller also placed 7th in last Saturday’s Xterra Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur against 15 other pro triathletes from around the world.
Miller will be competing against some of Cebu’s best triathletes in the 1.8-kilometer swim, 65k bike and 14k run event in Bogo.
“Northern Cebu is my training ground and I am really excited to return to Cebu and compete,” Miller said.
Miller is the back-to-back champion in the Filipino elite division of Xterra Philippines and finished third in the overall race in Lilo-an town, northern Cebu.
Miller considers Parklane Tri Team’s Kristiane Lim as his toughest opponent in the Bogo 80/80, considering that the latter dominated the recent triathlon events in Cebu while Miller was in Australia together with Allen.
Lim topped the National Age Group Triathlon series in Danao City, North Cebu and the Sugbu Triathlon Series. /CORRESPONDENTS DALE G. ROSAL and JADE S. VIOLETA
