SWU, JRU face off

THE SOUTHWESTERN University (SWU) Cobras and the Jose Rizal University (JRU) renew their hostilities toward one another on Wednesday as they face off in the Filoil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup at the Arena in San Juan City.
While the matchup may not be called a rivalry just yet, the seeds of it becoming one were planted nearly a month ago when the two teams clashed for the crown in the Mayor Lani Pena Cup in the Municipality of Minglanilla.
That game met a violent end as the Heavy Bombers decided to walk out and not finish the game after their forward, King Benemerito, got into a scuffle with SWU’s Daryl Goloran that nearly triggered a free-for-all.
Ever since that incident, the Cobras have circled their calendars for this match-up.
“Certainly, we have unfinished business with them,” said SWU assistant coach Rocky Alcoseba.
SWU’s fiery head coach, Raul “Yayoy” Alcoseba, on the other hand, had tamer things in mind as he hopes that their second go-around in the Filoil produces better results than their 3-5 (win-loss) showing last year.
“Hopefully, by the end of this tournament, we would be a better basketball team,” said Alcoseba, whose team will be banking on their core of Cesafi MVP Mark Jayven Tallo, Adams Mohammed, rookie Fil-American guard JR Parker and imports Landry Sanjo and Justin Aboude.
In other games today, the Lyceum Pirates will be taking on the undefeated Far Eastern University while St. Benilde battles San Sebastian. /Correspondent Jonas Panerio
