Girl with leukemia from Lapu-Lapu City seeks help

A three-year-old girl from Barangay Pajo, Lapu-Lapu City is earnestly seeking for financial help to support her ongoing chemotherapy treatment.

Shania Gwen Valdehueza was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) last June 6, 2019. Three months before her diagnosis, unusual symptoms of a disease began to appear. “Nia,” as she is affectionately called by her family, experienced recurring fever, easy fatigability, and pallor. She also had bruises on her skin accompanied with abdominal and joint pain. These symptoms caused her parents to bring her to the hospital. A complete blood count was done and it showed low red blood cell and platelet count. As a result, she was given multiple blood transfusions. A bone marrow aspiration was also done and it revealed findings consistent with her diagnosis. Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia is a type of cancer of the blood which commonly affects children. Statistics have shown that this life-threatening disease can be cured with intensive chemotherapy which gives children a high chance of survival. Treatment mainly includes chemotherapy and regular laboratory workups.

Nia’s first dose of chemotherapy was administered last October 22, 2019. She was also placed under a three-year treatment protocol prescribed by her attending hematologist-oncologist. Presently, she is undergoing the first high-dose session of her chemotherapeutic regimen.

Nia is a loving and kindhearted little girl. She is the youngest of the two siblings in the family. As her chemotherapy progresses, her heartfelt prayer is for healing and recovery. Her father, the only breadwinner of the family, works as a security guard and earns a minimum wage. Her mother is a homemaker who centers her attention in caring for the family. Their family’s income is barely enough to meet their basic daily needs and sustaining the ongoing expenses of Nia’s chemotherapy is an uphill battle. The costly nature and long duration of the treatment had greatly exhausted their financial resources. Thus her parents are seeking for financial help from selfless individuals to help their beloved child achieve complete healing.
